We are having a great start to our 2018-2019 program year with strong participation in our educational and networking events!  As your President, I'm proud of the work we do to help our approximately 500 members representing over 180 Milwaukee companies improve their supply chain efforts. 

Thanks to everyone who was able to attend our September professional developmental meeting where we had a fun night learning about the recent multi-million dollar Pabst Brewery & Taproom renovations and networking with other local supply chain professionals. Then in early October, we got to hear from a legendary tool maker CEO, as Nick Pinchuk from Snap-On Tools shared his thoughts on the secrets to success of this great Wisconsin company. 

We also had some robust breakfast roundtable discussions on today's hottest topics such as building a workforce for the future, understanding blockchain technology and capacity management.  

A couple weeks ago, I was fortunate to attend the APICS 2018 national conference and was encouraged by the direction our organization is headed. As you likely heard by now, APICS National is changing its name to ASCM (Association Supply Chain Management). ASCM reinforces their all-encompassing supply chain organizational support. At this point, we will not be changing the name of our Milwaukee Chapter.

We still have much more to come with a full schedule of educational, networking and developmental opportunities. 

At our next professional development meeting scheduled for November 15th, we'll get to hear from Sandra Smith, Founder and President of Insight Talent Solutions speak to, “The War on Talent & The Supply Chain.” We know this is a critical challenge for manufacturers all over the country per the recently published 2018 Third Quarter Manufacturers' Outlook Survey that stated, “73.2% of Manufacturers cite the inability to attract a quality workforce as their top challenge. 

We'll also have a deeper dive on Supply Chain extended fundamentals program launching on November 1st. Based on your feedback, we have split the program up this year so our members can sign up for 1 or all 3 days based on the content that's most relevant to them.  Use this special promo code 1-1-0-1 by October 26th to receive $25 off per person. 

We will continue to offer bi-monthly Breakfast Roundtable Meetings at the Menomonee Falls and Brookfield locations. We are excited to continue to work with our two student chapters at UW Milwaukee and UW Whitewater. An important part of our mission is to spark students' interest in supply chain methodologies through case competitions, internships, resume reviews, mentoring, and more.

A natural extension of Core Fundamentals, this workshop introduces professionals to applications of company-wide planning methods. The tools discussed are used for viewing the “big picture” and assessing the impact of the current schedule on labor and material requirements over a longer period of time. 

Forecasting & Master Scheduling:  November 1st (8:00am - 4:30pm)

  • Forecasting and demand planning is a multi-step operational supply chain manangement process used to create reliable forecasts.  Effective demand planning can guide users to improve the accuracy of revenue, align inventory levels with peaks and troughs in demand, and enhance profitability for a given channel or product.  Focus will be on Sales and Operations Planning, and short and long term forecasting.

  • Master Production Scheduling is the process that helps manufacturers plan which products and related quantities to produce during certain periods.  MPS is proactive in that it actually drives the production process in terms of what is manufactured and what materials are procured.  MPS also serves a bridge to sales as it informs them about what is available to promise customers and when deliveries can be made.  Focus will beon planning stages, purpose of MPs, MPS formats, level scheduling, lean daily management, and MPS benefits.


Bills of Material & Capacity:  November 8th  (8:00am - 4:30pm)

  • Bills of Material is ideally suited for those supply chain professionals who support or interact with product engineering, manufacturing engineering as well as industrial engineering.  It introduces essential vocabulary and skills in identifying and applying the basic principles of bills of material and the impact that they have on planning and scheduling manufacturing operations.

  • Capacity Management is ideally suited for those supply chain professionals who support or interact with production control, manufacturing engineering as well as industrial engineering.  It introduces essential vocabulary and skills in identifying and applying the basic principles of capacity management, as well as the impact on front-line manufacturing operations.

Lean Manufacturing & Total Systems:  November 13th  (8:00am - 4:30pm)

  • Lean Supply Chain is ideally suited for those supply chain professionals who support or interact with any departments involved with the implementation of lean or, continuous supply chain improvement initiatives.  It introduces essential vocabulary and skills in identifying and applying the basic principles of a lean supply chain, as well as the impact on front-line manufacturing operations.

  • Total Systems discusses those aspects of the business that keep us on the straight and narrow.  The focus is less on the mechanics of running a business but on how to maintain and continually improve overall growth, profit and operational excellence.  The focus is more on how to focus your energies and limited resources on winning and staying a winner.  The class will discuss corporate metrics of all forms, that winning companies do to stay winners (Customer Focus).  The class will discuss what winning organizations do in today's Global markets to succeed.

The term “sustainability” has been used in the context of resource management for almost 30 years, but the definition changes with each expert consulted. One of the broadest definitions of the term comes from a report by the United Nations (UN) 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED). The UN report defines sustainability as “using resources to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED, 1987). Although the UN’s definition is viewed to be particularly broad, the message is clear— individuals and the
organizations they form (nations, corporations, society, etc.) should consider the future when accessing and using resources. For generations, we have collectively had a supply of resources that far exceeded our needs, but evidence suggests that these natural resources are becoming more stressed over time. Without implementing extensive and meaningful sustainability practices, in the future key resources will be harder— if not impossible— to acquire.
In discussing the strain on natural resources, Bell et al. (2012) suggest that although some resources have the capability to regenerate from a sustainability perspective (e.g., trees can be replanted and left uncut long enough to reforest previously cleared regions, restoring sustainability), this is not true in all cases. Oil that requires eons to form underground cannot be replenished in the way trees or fisheries might. When considering that the supply of some resources is finite, the UN’s caution is relevant. Care must be taken to manage our resources so as to retain these critical assets for future generations.
