From the President

Shawn Rothe, 2017-2018 APICS Milwaukee Chapter President

Welcome to the Milwaukee Chapter of APICS 2017 – 2018 program year! Our continuous goal as a Chapter is to help Milwaukee Chapter members achieve their Professional Development and Educational Certification Goals. To that end, the Chapter has a full schedule of education classes this fall which include: Basics of Supply Chain Management, Master Planning of Resources, Detailed Scheduling and Planning, Execution and Control of Operations, Strategic Management of Resources, Certified Supply Chain Professional, & APICS Core Fundamentals.

Please visit: HTTP://APICSMILW.ORG/EDUCATION for scheduled class dates and times at WCTC.

We are pleased to continue offering bi-monthly Breakfast Roundtable Meetings at the Menomonee Falls and Brookfield locations. These are lively discussions of relevant operational topics chosen by the Roundtable participants. Come to hear the challenges and success stories shared by your fellow APICS members. Please visit: HTTP://APICSMILW.ORG/BREAKFAST_ROUNDTABLES for scheduled dates & topics on future Roundtables.

I would like to introduce myself as the APICS Milwaukee Chapter President.  I am the Supply Chain Manager for Sellars Absorbent Materials, based in Milwaukee, WI.  Sellars is a leading manufacturer of shop towels, disposable wipers, and sorbents made with recycled fibers. Their products can be found in major retailers, as well as many janitorial/sanitary maintenance, industrial, safety, and specialty distributors in North America and Europe. I am responsible for scheduling our converting assets as well as inventory of raw and finished goods materials.

My career at Sellars started over 18 years ago.  I got my start working in the warehouse and driving the company truck.  As the company has grown, so have my opportunities within the company.  I have moved from a warehouse/driver to Shipping/Receiving Supervisor to Master Scheduler to Converting Operations Manager and now my current position.

I have been an APICS member for 9 years and have been on the APICS Milwaukee Board of Directors as the Marketing Director, Secretary, President-Elect and now my current role as President.  I feel APICS has given me the tools to grow and be prepared to succeed in the various positions within Sellars.  I received my CPIM certification in March of 2014.  I plan to continue to use APICS certifications to develop tools and knowledge for continued opportunities.

We, the Board Members of the Milwaukee Chapter, appreciate your attendance at the Chapter events and would like to hear from you. What has worked in the past? What would you like to see in the future? What should we eliminate? This is your Chapter; we are here to help you achieve your Professional and Educational goals.

We look forward to meeting you or re-connecting with you at an APICS event this fall.

Shawn Rothe, CPIM

In Case You Missed It........

AUGUST 9th Radisson Menomonee Falls Breakfast Roundtable PDM

The summer roundtables ended on a strong note with the topic, “Implementing Process and System Changes.”  Nine companies were represented: Thermo Fisher Scientific, MillerCoors, Sanborn Tube Sales, Sierra Nevada Corporation, Kerslake & Associates, ASI Doors, Guardian Business Solutions, KHS USA, and Desert Aire.

The way that we change organizations is through projects led by good leadership and dedicated teams. Our discussion focused around an article for the latest APICS Magazine, “Mastering DIRECT Project Leadership” by Daniel Stanton.

"Mastering DIRECT Project Leadership"

Paraphrased  from Peter Drucker, management is about doing things right, while leadership is about doing the right things.

A couple key points of the discussion:

  1.      There needs to be a good clear definition of the vision.
  2.      The options require a thorough investigation.
  3.      A course of action needs to be planned and executed.
  4.      People need to be transitioned.
  5.      The projection needs evaluation.

The struggles of poor planning and execution that comes from a lack of leadership drove the topic for next month’s Brookfield roundtable on September 13, “How Do We Measure Improvement”.  We will be looking at how to sell new ideas to management.
